Feeding the Monster

by dlangendorf on January 19, 2012

No matter if it’s your website, a blog, a podcast, even Twitter and Facebook, you need to feed the monster. You need to provide it content. Redesigns. Links. Posts. Uploads. Pictures. Tweets. Status updates. Doesn’t matter.

You need to feed the monster.

If you don’t, people who visit your website, read your blog, listen to your podcast, or read your wisdom on Twitter and Facebook get disenfranchised. They might return once, twice (if you’re lucky), but if there is no new content they’ve done with you. They might even say, or think, nasty things about you.

I hate to say it, but my monster is very, very hungry.

This is why, for the most part, you may only see this post on the “front page”. If I choose to write something about design, a product I’m experimenting with, or I’m venting on my beloved St. Louis Cardinals, I’ll do it on a separate page, or maybe on Twitter or Facebook when time permits or inspiration hits.

It’s not that I don’t have anything to say. I do. Lots. About design. Education. Sports. Music. Products. Technology. Family. Politics. Books. Fashion. The iPhone. The iPad. The Internet. The Media. Culture. Religion. Exercise. Health. TV. Movies. Home improvement. Live performance. Art. Jazz. Kids.

But, while I began my professional career as a newspaper reporter and investigative writer, while I enjoy writing and telling stories, I also like doing. I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter, even if it’s watching Luther or Homeland on a rainy Saturday afternoon. I like talking to Tony or Big Dave about design. Mike about sports. Dr. Baylis about education and life.

Now, at least, my monster isn’t so hungry.
